Biography

Gerrit was born in Kingston on 23 January 1697.[1]

Gerrit was baptized at Kingston. He is the son of Aart Gerritsen and Aaltje Elten. [2] The witnesses were Gerrit's grandfather, Gerrit Aartse, and his grandmother, Jacomyntje Elten. He was mentioned in his grandfather's will [3].

He married Theuntje Van d'n Burg on 8 August 1718 at the New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church.[4] Their known children are:

Aard [5]
Gerrit [6]
Jacob [7]
Huybert [8]
Marytjen [9]
Aaltjen [10]
Elisabeth [11]

In 1723 Gerrit and his wife witnessed the baptism of his cousin, Johannes Van Wageningen. [12]

In 1724 Gerrit and his wife witnessed the baptisms of his cousin, Johannes Freer [13], and Zara Herris [14].

He was a schoolmaster and surveyor in Ulster County until 1733. He laid out the ground given by Henry Beekman to the Dutch Church at Rinebeck. [1] The survey is dated August 26, 1730, and signed by "Ger. Van Wagenen," which was his usual way of signing his name.[15]

After 1833 he was a chorister and parochial schoolmaster in the Middle Dutch Church. His son Huybert took his place upon his death.[16]

"On the 250th anniversary of the schools of the Collegiate Reformed Dutch Church in New York, December 13, 1883, a tablet was presented and set up in the school, 160 West 29th Street, bearing the names of the teachers of the school since 1633. Among these the names of Van Wagenen holds an honorable position."[1]
